Rongowhakaata, Ngai Tamanuhiri, Ngati Kahungunu, Ngati Hine
Fiona is a kete maker and attributes her style of work to her teacher and mentor, Christina Wirihana, from whom she learned as a student at Waiariki Polytechnic, Rotorua, in the 1980’s. Fiona description of herself as a kete maker rather than a kete weaver, refers to her use of decorative additions to her kete in the form of paua shells, feathers and other natural media. Fiona makes her kete from her home in Hastings and teaches kete making in her spare time as her way of giving back to the art.
